"But there is something suspicious in the intentions of such a state when it searches out Muslim friends from afar, while distancing itself from the one local Muslim that could help it solve its problems." I believe, Mr. Bar'el you have asked the right question. Why would Israel concern itself with making friends with Mushareff when it ignores Abbas. Once talk occurs between the Israeli leaders and the Palestinian leaders, the more credibility will come to Israel. The world is not blind to the unilateral movement from Gaza. The unilateral behavior is still suspect by the world at large. Should Sharon's gov start working with Abbas' gov, I think the world will fall into line. Look at the good will created by removing settlers from Gaza. It was only a first step though. The settlers in Hebron today are running amuk. The question is will the Israeli government turn a blind eye or step up to the plate and put a stop to the settler rampage? It is not rocket science to know which behavior will get the positive attention of the world.
