in terms of the importance on collective memory and culture, the 1948 war and consequent exile of thousands of people is as important an event in the memory of the palestinians as the holocaust was to the jews. lehavdil, of course, but it would be like telling jews they can't commemorate the holocaust because it in some way offends the state their living in. a huge blow for freedom of speech.
