Before the Roman Empire became the Holy Roman Empire it was the Christians who were persecuted. After Constantine took up Christianity for political reasons the Jews became western humanities whipping boy, due to the crucifixion of a Jew called Jesus. What Shlomo Sand's questions is are the people who call themselves Jews today, the same people of that Jesus period. Why is he not allowed to question who we are, or in fact who are we. Last week in Haaretz it was said that more than 300,000 Israelis have registered as being without religion. So are those people still Jews?
