The Israeli Jew does not worry about the synagogue, Jewish education, acceptance by neighbors, availability of kosher food, etc. They are not in the same place as Diaspora Jews. Israelis are shocked by diaspora Jews attachment to synagogues, they are shocked that Diaspora Jews have thorough knowledge of Israeli geography, history and politics, and they do not understand our attachment to Israel. Is it Diaspora Jews' fault? No. Is it the Israeli educational system's faulyt? Most likely. It is most likely due to sense and need for Israelis to be self reliant and independent. In the effort, they look to themselves and not their non-Israeli counterparts. In other words, A.B. Yehoshua is narrow minded and nearsighted. If he truly has a global perspective, he would not have said what he did.
