The audacity - and ignorance - to label as "traitors, "anarchists, "unsuccessful" and "ignoramuses" thousands of people who had the moral courage to speak out publicly against the illegality and immorality of a settlement policy that prevents the progress of peace-negotiations from which we all would benefit, is mind-boggling! A great segment of the signatories of the opposition-statement to artistic performances in Ariel are world-renowned artists, writers and intellectuals who have reaped international recognition and awards (as well as Israeli academic and literary awards!), who have fought in Israel's wars, who have lost sons in those wars and who have been recognized and applauded for being the conscience of Israel - both within the country and abroad. The ones who are undermining democracy here are those who would suggest "punishing" those brave and sorely needed voices of reason by labeling them as "traitors" and by even speaking of withdrawing government funding for their activities, because those actions would demonstrate a willingness to abandon those basic democratic rights of freedom of speech and freedom of public dissent which are the underpinning and the strength of a democratic system.
