As my (Jewish) father-in-law says," If you get three Jews together, you get five kinds of Judaism." As for being born into it-- religion isn't transmitted genetically. People convert in and out all the time. Or, they don't convert, but don't practice. Or, they are not born of a Jewish mother, but DO practice.
