Whether Assad prevails or not, this whole episode has been a setback to the Palestinian cause. - Comment - Israel News | Haaretz Daily Newspaper

For two reasons: One is world public opinion. The Palestinian marketing and PR machine has done an excellent job over the years of driving Palestinian interests to the top of the international agenda. The oppression in Syria, coming on top of other recent crimes (violence in Iraq, oppression, tyranny and murder in the self proclaimed democracy of Iran, to name just a few), are just one more piece of evidence, presented to a candid world, of the mess that is the Middle East - Israel's crimes look trivial by comparison. I take no pleasure in this as I firmly support a Palestinian state, and was disappointed in their failure at the UN. The other reason is that this episode has exposed many of Israel's critics, as not merely fakes phonys and frauds, but as nasty people who support tyranny, murder and oppression when it's their boy doing the dirty deeds. People don't like to be preached to by unethical fakes and phony's, especially pious and sanctimonious ones, and only the very guillable will pay attention to proven liars.
