The ancient Sidi Omar mosque, the only mosque in the Jewish quarter, stands next to the newly built Hurva synagogue. But it is allowed by the Israeli authorities to fall into ruin, just like the old mosque in Tiberias and the central mosque in Beersheva, to name but a few. I wonder when these mosques will be rehabilitated and re-dedicated? Since the ethnic cleansing of 1948-49 many mosques all over Israel are off limits to Israeli Palestinians. The re-dedication of the Hurva synagogue is much more than just an innocent religious ceremony. In the context of Palestinians from the Westbank being denied access to the al-Aqsa mosque and the relentless illegal Jewish colonisation the rebuilt Hurva synagogue is seen as just one more symbol of Zionist domination in Palestinian occupied territory.
