The murder of Baruch Goldstein was an abhorrent act of terrorism, but it was abhorred by the overwhelming majority of Israelis. The spate of attacks against Israelis around Hebron, including the recent murder, is celebrated by Palestinian political leaders and if the perpetrators are caught and imprisoned, they will receive a generous salary from the PA. Hebron had a Jewish community for thousands of years until the massacre of 1929. It is the burial place of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob and their wives and the shrine at the Cave of Macpellah built by King Herod still stands. It is the second holiest place in Judaism after the Temple Mount. When Jews returned to Hebron after the 6 day war they were returning to Jewish owned property. The security arrangements in Hebron were agreed by the PA in the Hebron Protocol and signed by Saab Erekat.
