the king says whatever he thinks the US wants to hear (or, more precisely, whatever he thinks will best advance his agenda with the US). When meeting with someone else, he adjust his statements. When the king has to reach a decision, he puts all statements aside and does whatever he thinks will do him the most good at that moment. It's called diplomacy, and the fact that US interests appear to be being flattered in this batch of leaks needn't surprise anyone. Woe though to he who gives any of it too much credence: for secret does not equal honest.
