First of all under American law all its citizens are treated equally, in Israel democracy is applied as the tyranny of the majority. Secondly, a well-intentioned Jew acknowledges the particular complexities involved with establishing a Jewish homeland in the region and the obligation it owes to those who suddenly found themselves being forced to live in someone else's country - but too many Jews were utterly insensitive to the situation. We owed it to ourselves to show that we understood that we were benefitting at someone else's expense and to the Arab citizenry to show that they were welcome in the new country. Instead Israel has for much of its existence preferred to play the bull in the china-shop and make sure that its own non-Jewish citizens are keenly aware of who is the overlord in this situation. From the first days of the state I know well-intentioned Jews who said that every Israeli Jewish child should be taught Arabic in school to show positive intent to their non-Jewish fellow citizens. Of course, this measure was never implemented. Virtually every Israeli Jew speaks English, far too few have bothered to master Arabic. Discrimination is widespread and increasing, shame on us!
