The USA has always known that Israeli construction in the WB and EJ is illegal. But BECAUSE its sympathies are with Israel it has sunk enormous effort into a "negotiated peace" where Israel has those colonies ceded to it, thereby legalizing that which is illegal. While it continues to do that it is loath to declare that these colonies are illegal, because doing so undercuts the USA's DIPLOMATIC efforts. But Israel is signalling that it doesn't give a shit about a "negotiated peace"; it has decided it can get everything it wants merely by continuing its ILLEGAL policies until there is simply nothing left for the Pals. Which means the time will come - and soon - when the USA accepts that Israel is not interested in the USA's efforts to "legalize" those illegal acts. At that point the USA may as well call it as it truly sees it i.e. it will declare that Israeli construction is illegal. Not "unhelpfull" Not "illegitimate" But "illegal".
