that the politics and beliefs of the ultra-orthodox do not exist in a vacuum now, the way they might have when they were limited to a few neighborhoods in Jerusalem, and had little influence on Israeli policy. Like it or not, their actions have become a visible and direct reflection on all Israelis and therefore on all Jews, secular or otherwise. The whole goy world doesn't make a distinction between this type of Jew and the other. They have a hard time even grappling with the idea that Jews are both a religious and in some sense -- or through their own persecution, by default -- an ethnic group. Therefore the bad behavior of a highly visible, powerful, radically conservative group of Jews in Israel can have quite real and violent consequences for, say, secular Jews on the streets of Buenos Aires. In fact, I think that's exactly what they want to have happen. They need to be shut up, and secular, reform, conservative, orthodox, diaspora and Israeli Jews need to come together and denounce the hatred and medievalist mentality they stand for, and say THIS IS NOT US.
