Why did Israel leave Gaza? The move was not explained to the Palestinians, it was unilateral. The move also was not explained to the Israelis and there was no public debate about it; the Left, including Peres who then belonged to Labor before he turned his colors, supported the evacuation and preferred no discussion. Israel had to find out from Sharon's aides after the latter went into his coma. Sharon left Gaza in order to strengthen Israel's hold on the West Bank, turning it into a Bantustan (in Sharon's terminology). So why expect Hamas to step their resistance? Were they supposed to join Peres' fantasies? Peres, whether you understand people's motivations or not depends on your own shortcomings. And if you really don't understand something, just ask and find out.
