"Good people hoped that the withdrawal from the Gaza Strip was a down payment on a withdrawal from the West Bank". I suppose that they were also good people who saw removing "eastern Jews" from Germany as progess and a down payment. The harsh truth is that in both cases it was not a down payment to achieve peace, but rather a first step in what was perceived as the total elimnation of the undesired. In this case the Israeli "good people" want to see the end of all settlers. Very left is in doubt as to how far they will go to achieve that aim. Such "goodness" we would do well to avoid.
