"Any renewed cooperation between Fatah and Hamas will be, from our point of view, a breakdown of the political process," - Olmert (to Abbas) Bush and Olmert are adamant that Hamas must be detroyed. Never mind that they showed encouraging adaptability to circumstances. But if there is no hope for Hamas they will not adapt but fight against the peace process (which they succeeded in undoing in 1996). What can Hamas do? 1. Learn from the Israeli example and assassinate Abbas. Upon the death of the President, the Speaker of Parliament (Hamas) becomes President until elections are held. The possibility of holding elections now is dubious at best. 2. Initiate terror attacks in/from the West Bank. This will disrupt if not derail peace talks. 3. Ratchet up a campaign of Katyushas and Qassams from Gaza. Similar action by Hizballah in the north. At least they will not be ignored. 4. Invite al-Qaida to come into Gaza and even to the West Bank. Frighten Israel and Egypt enough to change course. The sad thing is that within the unity government, Hamas was allowing Abbas to negotiate peace and have a cease fire. Ideologues of the Bush variety would rather fight than get for free something they want.
