Aviation, electronics, containerisation were all driven by and supported by Government handouts. Why? The so called free market wouldn't touch them with a barge pole. Too little profit and too many losses in the short and medium run for private companies to deal with. Add to that little list the war machine [which now alone consumes more than half the entire federal budget] and you start to see that America and the free market have less in common then the hype ridden cliches that pass for economic news would suggest. Then again, for those truly lobotomized folks one should consider the massive public subsidies paid out to the US agricultural sector and throw in the obscene sums handed over to US big Pharma and even the economic illiterates will get the picture.
