If PA had backed down, or if the UN hadn't granted the PA its new status, what then? Then Bibi would have cried from the rooftops about Israel's great victory; and, perhaps, announced thousands of new settlements anyway. In his unprecedented cynicism, Bibi has created a zero-sum game: a victory abroad rallies his troops, a failure abroad rallies his troops. The rightwing voter can't be bothered to notice the contradiction; only a renewal of the left, or military intervention from without, has ever been successful at bringing down this type of government, and each option seems less likely than the other.
