They merely have their clan. When someone stands up against them, they try to break it with all might and brutality. Against their "own" people or against anyone else. No difference. Otherwise: why haven't the Syrians slaughtered lebanese christians during the 80s? Answer: There was no need, cause they weren't a real threat. Though, this said, it does NOT improve the quality of Assad et.al.
