"I have nothing to offer but blood, toil, tears and sweat." - Churchill The biggest mistake the PLO made was in unconditionally giving up on "resistance" in return for Oslo. National liberation movements only give up on resistance as part of a final peace deal. For example, the IRA has only dismantled recently, years after the Good Friday agreement. Without the option of violence, the other side gets most of the cards and can pressure the natives into a corner. In the Oslo case, the number of settlements kept growing and more and more was the promised Palestinian state looking like a bunch of Bantustans (in Arik Sharon's language). And everytime the Palestinians "resisted" they were termed terrorists and lost credibility in the world. Hamas is actually better positioned in this respect. They are not part of the PLO, never promised to dismantle their militias, and have shown their steadfastness in the clearest way possible, while adapting themselves and moderating their positions to reality. Abbas should recognize that the unity government he had was the correct and effective political arrangement that would allow then Palestinians to gain their state. This is what he must sell to Israel and the world. And to his people he should sell Churchill's words. This is what is good for the Palestinians, but also what is good for Israel, because a one-state solution is unacceptable to the Jews.
