The USA Made it absolutely clear last year that it would never do anything to make Palestinian Statehood possible. The USA made it absolutely clear that it would act in concert with Israel to prevent any two state solution, any Palestine, and any end to occupation. The USA had been faking it for years, but until last year Israel was careful to leave America the room to argue it was in fact an honest broker. Then Netanyahu shoved his policies up one end of Obama and down the other. Then he yoddled about his great victory. In September of 2010 any pretense that the USA actually supported Palestinian freedom was utterly destroyed. That is why Abbas is grasping at the last straw, the last chance, for a peaceful resolution of Israel's war of removal if not eradication on the Palestinians. If Abbas fails now - and the USA will do everything it can to cause him to fail - then the Palestinians will have no choice other than to submit to extinction or fight for their freedom.
