Start with your conclusion ie. that orthodoxy has a legitimate monopoly on the Israeli public sphere and then argue backwards. The point of Hoffman and many many other Israelis (including the enlightened orthodox) reject this monopoly. This monopoly does not limit its usurpation of individual liberty at the Kotel, it is spreading to putting women in the back of the buses, removing pictures of women on ads, covering up young girl dancers at public functions, forbidding women from signing in public functions, totally denying gays any liberty, creating a structurally poor class of welfare receiving families whose men do not work and whose women are required to birth endless children to meet the social pressure, etc. etc. The Wall is one very loud manifestation of this disastrous state of affairs. Well David, you may start with the conclusion and work backwards, but us simple citizens do not accept this axiom as writ in stone. We want a normal pluralistic society where everyone's dignity and rights are protected in particular in the public space.
