I finally was able to return a call to someone from earlier this week from Vancouver, Canada. It turns out this elderly woman knew my parents from an Israeli Club Aluma, in Toronto, a chapter of B'nai Brith for the elderly. She was bothered by my letters to the editor which interfers with the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. I tried to reassure her that my loyality to the Jewish community and peace in Israel reflected the views of many Israelis and I felt compelled to help my relatives in Israel and my community. I mentioned if the editor felt what I wrote was damaging to Israel, he would omit publishing it. She reminded me that Abraham paid for the land currently where settlements are comprised and this was rightfully the Jewish peoples' territory, perhaps my views were aiding the Palestinians, even the Canadian government officials have not articulated my views, etc. She repeated that I shouldn't write about such things. So therefore, because I have such a weakness for and respect for eastern European Jewish Holocaust survivors, especially the Polish survivors, I will not mention the West Bank settlements anymore. I will advocate for the importance of a defensible border between the two states and that perhaps the precondition of a settlement freeze by Israel be waived until peace negotiations begin with the PA. I'll bequeath the responsibility to my Canadian government and the Israeli government to take the lead regarding this issue, because I've said enough about the West Bank settlements.(February 16, 2013).
