It is obvious that Hamas has succeeded in painting Israel into a corner by inviting this latest military action. If we had implemented a cease fire in Gaza and the WB, it would have taken the wind out of Hamas's sails by eliminating the legitimacy for armed resistance and violence. If we had wanted to bolster Fatah and weaken Hamas, diplomacy would have been the answer. And even though Hamas' goals as expressed here were totally transparent, the Israeli government chose to ignore them and took the bait hook, line and sinker. Tragically the citizens of Sderot and non-militant Palestinians will now pay the price. What is even more evident is that the objectives of Hamas and Fatah are not promoting the welfare of the Palestinian people or establishing a state. It is becoming more and more apparent that they are bringing a two-state solution further and further from anyone's grasp. Either that was never their goal at all or they are going down the wrong road. Probably both.
