It is time the right realized that no peace deal constitutes more of a threat to Israel than that imposed by a demographic takeover that they feel is inherent in the right of return. It is a sorry excuse, since a hostile Palestinian population living under occupation is much more of a threat than a Palestinian state alongside us. It is doubtful that many of the ancestors of the 1949 refugees would want to live in the present-day Jewish state. In reality, right of return would be granted to a token number, and compensation granted to the rest, who would settle in Palestine. The issue of right of return cannot serve as prerequisite for negotiations against the background of the Hamas charter that calls for the replacement of Israel with a Palestinian state. The conflict will be solved when both peoples outsmart their stubborn leaders, stop living in denial, and accept eath other's rights as something other than an impending threat. Both sides deserve better.
