As early as January 1943 there were aerial recon photographs by B-24 Liberators of the then US Army Air Force of the German factory works near Auschwitz Birkenau. In the aerial photographs that were first reviewed at the forward 15th Air Force USAAF Intelligence ARIU, Air Force Recon Interpretation Unit in Libya. Members of the ARIU were not really focused on the facilities of Auschwitz but on the IG Farben and munitions works. The nearby refinery was supposed to have been the target of a B-24 raid by the 15th Air Force in the aftermath of the daring World War II bombing raid on the oil refineries at Ploiesti, Romania raid. The raid on Ploiesti which took place on Sunday, Aug. 1, 1943, was deemed a success, even though 54 of the 177 bombers that took part were lost, and 53 more were heavily damaged. But due to the cost the Allies were hesitant on committing to another raid in the area until the USAF could gain air superiority in the area. In January 1942 the protocols of the Wannsee Conference were forwarded by Ultra code to the leaders of the Einzergruppen working in the three SS areas of the Eastern Front Reconnaissance. This transmission was intercepted and decode in Bletchley Park by members of the ULTRA team and the entire report was forwarded to Churchill?s desk. Churchill passed the information to Joseph Kennedy who informed Cordell Hull. Hull refused to believe the report and Churchill asked the RAF to make a plan but nothing was done and Jews died.
