You defeat an enemy when their will to resist is crushed. Obviously Israel will not defeat Hezbollah, since she has voluntarily (and wisely, I think) limited her ground forces to the Litani River. Hezbollah will be willing to fight on, and will have plenty of new cannon fodder volunteering as the days roll on. The best Israel can do is negotiate with her enemy, so that the outcome is win-win. Hezbollah needs Israel out of Lebanon, the Israeli-held prisoners returned, and Shabaa Farms submitted to (say) an international court for binding judgment. Israel needs a buffer zone separating it from Hezbollah, an end to the costly military mobolization, a return to work for the citizens of Northern Israel. Since you cannot win the war, then gain the peace - start negotiating, and get this costly war ended quickly. By the way, as fossil fuels run out, wars like the one Israel is waging become more and more costly. Be at peace with your neighbors before you lose technological advantage.
