Israel’s occupation has never ceased to be in violation of international law---the settlements multiply Israel’s culpability as they expand. By pretending to be powerless regarding the expansion of settlements, Israel projects an image of underhanded state manipulation. No amount of propaganda or theological rationalizations will convince the international community that Israel has a legal right to claim Palestinian territory beyond the 1967 borders. By aiding and abetting Israel’s multiple violations of the Geneva Conventions, the U.S. has contributed not only to the destabilizing conditions in the region, but also undermines Israel's long term security. John Kerry's mission to the so-called peace process will not succeed for the simple reason that the U.S. is not an unbiased mediator. The U.S. as always, sides with Israel’s position of gradualism via a two-state solution, thereby postponing indefinitely final status talks regarding borders. On the one hand the postponement of final status talks allows Israel to continue its expansion into Palestinian territory; on the other hand illegal land acquisitions adds to Israel’s image as a rogue state, a not favorable reputation destined to advance its standing in the international community.
