Instead of waiting for Israel to do the job for them, Fatah should be waiting for Barghouti to come out of jail and reform Fatah, the corrupt and declining organization. Hamas won the recent elections not because the Palestinians suddenly became fundamentalist Islamists, but because they got tired of the Fatah corruption and ineffectuality. Hamas is effective politically; it got Israel out of Gaza, it got Kadimah to break away from the Likud, and it got Olmert to agree (so far) to grab only 10% of the West Bank instead of 60%. Israel is not acting with vision and therefore is seen to be responding to Hamas' actions. The ineffectuality of Fatah continues to this day. Abbas is, and is seen to be, subservient to the US and Israel. He is accepting crumbs instead of insisting on what the Palestinians would appreciate, a viable state. We will give you your money back, and a few prisoners (fewer than ISRAEL is willing to release for Shalit), but no cease fire in The West Bank, Mr. Abbas. We go in and hunt your Fatah militia whenever we feel like it. Fatah has to reform itself. Competition from Hamas will be good for it. It needs a strong leader and one with vision. Not a Pozzo but a Godot
