Israel has steadily undermined a diplomatic solution to the occupation and Abbas' position as a negotiating partner, collectively punishing the Palestinians for the pending UN bid. The rationale behind the current military operations is, on one hand, to undercut Abbas and on the other, to "prove" to the world that the democratically elected Hamas government is dangerous and violent, and also not a "partner for peace." Hence, the status quo will be reinforced and no permanent solution considered. Six of eight Israeli elections have been preceded by military operations designed to bolster exactly this position. But, having provoked Hamas, Israeli will reap what it has sown, and in light of the wider political movements in the Muslim world, may at last have overplayed its hand.
