The Israeli establishment cannot forgive Vanunu his conversion to Christianity. Obviously, he does not commit any crimes right now, and it is doubtful that his talking to the press over 20 years ago constituted any either. In democracies, his would be a very weak case. In Middle Eastern countries, all religious fundamentalist states, it is a horrible crime to 1) be an apostate and 2) speak the all-evident truth about "security matters" of Kafkaesk apparatuses and personnel.
