israel's original goal was to survive the genocidal attack by the combined arab armies bent on throwing the jews into the sea. it is impossible to be a lamb among wolves in sheeps' clothig. one should not confuse high ethical standards with a utopian dream. israel is not any less ethical than any western country. indeed, israel has maintained high ethical standards while fighting for her very existance and absorbing millions of immigrants from the all corners of the world. compared to other western armies, tzahal is the most moral army in the world. this does not mean that israel is perfect. just as there are no perfect humans, there are no perfect countries. jews, as noted by the author, gave the world the building blocks of civilisation: day for rest, respect for strangers, charity toward the poor, laws of hygiene, courts of law built on justice, freeing of slaves, respect for women, love of neighbours, the ten commandments, and more. yet jews are to this day despised for precisely their contributions to ethics. they are not despised because they succeed in the realm of the secular world, but because they are jews, people who attempt to be an example to others. jews are despised because their original covenant with g*d is seen as excluding the other. it is unreasonable to ask of the jewish state of israel to be better than all other nations on earth. let some other nation assume that mantle. let the nations of the world leave us alone and improve their own ethics. the blueprint on how to do it has been there for over three thousand years. all it takes is dedication and faith in the giver of laws and of the word.
