Israel alone is responsible for having to make all the judgments AND DECISIONS concerning how to assure its own long-term survival. As an insider to many US administrations , I have witnessed the tug-of-war that goes on within(and between) the White House, State Department, Defense Department,US Treasury etc. every time there is a decision to be made about whether to provide armaments or any other assistance or political support to Israel or to reward, punish or urge any specific Israeli actions. All advice that I provide is entirely from the viewpoint of an officer sworn to uphold US policies. ALL my actions are determined by my superiors and both military and civilian. Thus, I personally have been responsible for providing Israel with misinformation (that had been provided to me). I witnessed the tug-of-war between the State Department (Kissinger) and the Defense Department (Schlesinger) over whether to resupply Israel when it was being attacked and threatened with destruction. I did not realize how damaging providing AWACS capability to Saudi Arabia could be to Israel until the US objected (blindsiding Israel) when Israel had committed to providing similar technology to China. Within every administration there are many that are enemies of Israel. Remember; State Department was strongly against the recognition of Israel and supported an embargo of all military, communications, and similar supplies to Israel when it was being attacked in 1948. The issues raised are important. However, Israel never would have bombed the Iraq reactor if they required US permission in advance. Israel never would have bombed the Syrian reactor (even though US intelligence and the US State Department well aware of the North Korean-Syrian cooperation on this project) if they required US permission in advance. Israel never would have responded to the missiles that held the civilians hostage coming from Hezbollah and from Gaza if they required US permission in advance. And to this day missiles would be falling on Israel at an increasing rate. Currently, former President Clinton, the husband of the United States Secretary of State, is lobbying Israel on taxes to be levied on gas exploration companies. His vision is directed by those who pay his fees. Unfortunately, advice to Israel, including that from Thomas Friedman (who is regarded by the Saudis as having an extreme ego that they can play to their advantage) and those who are sympathetic like myself is colored by many influences. THE PROBLEM RAISED IS IMPORTANT AND YOU ARE TO BE COMPLEMENTED FOR INITIATING THIS DISCUSSION ON THIS VERY VITAL CONCERN.
