I'm of an age of American that was deeply touched by the Israeli cause, having been a teen-ager with a father newly returned from the war with tales of horror giving immediacy to daily news stories of the atrocities revealed in Japanese prison camps and the shocking scenes impacting the world with the opening of concentration camps in Europe. Reading about the fledgling state of Israel in our Weekly Readers in junior high school, seeing the pictures of all those young sun-kissed Israelis working the land, but facing a new enemy and then prevailing and emerging transformed, no longer seen as the gaunt cowering accomplices to their own destruction, they built their nation, putting the dark past behind them and moving on to take their place in the community of nations. For the past several years I find myself among an ever increasing number of people here and internationally who not only have lost respect for Israel, but no longer even consider Israel a friend of my country.
