When Israel started this war I thought that Israel, the tail, was once again wagging the American dog. We Americans are used to having Israel decide American foreign policy in the Middle East. But as the war drags on, I'm beginning to think that the shoe is on the other foot. Bush, his popularity badly sagging, and his party's control of Congress in the November elections very much at risk, needed a fresh Good Guys v. Bad Guys military adventure to galvanize the public, especially because the old one, in Iraq, isn't turning out so well. Olmert is only too glad to oblige -- one village idiot helping another. All the yada yada about Hizbollah being the proxy of Syria and Iran masks the larger truth that Israel is being used as the proxy of the U.S. Republican Party's re-election campaign ... and Bush is willing, nay determined, to fight on to the last drop of Israeli blood.
