During the cold war, The US loved the Turks because the US could stage it's forces along the USSR's southern flank. After the dissolution of the USSR, the need no longer exists. An interesting point... during the 1960s the US 6th fleet was denied Turkish port access because the Turks felt the USNavy was blatantly using Turkey as a bordello.
