Unlike Olmert, the UN is not trapped in a device of it's own making. Before Fatah undertook it's failed attempt to assassinate the leadership of Hamas and exterminate it in it's Gaza stronghold, there were lots of promises made. Mostly by Elliott Abrams, convicted Iran-Contra felon. We do not know what promises were made, only what he bragged to the conservative press in the year before. We do not know what, if anything, Olmert himself had promised, or if Abrams promised Olmert's compliance. We do know that after the failed attempt to exterminate Hamas, the Israelis and US left Abbas dangling in the wind to await his fate. Olmert and Bush have to be rid of Hamas before the 'peace summit." They are trapped and are grasping at ever more desperate straws. The UN is not trapped, and cautions wisely.
