The US needs to recognize that Israel has no intention whatsoever of cutting a deal with the Palestinians that allows for yet another Arab state along reduced borders. No matter that Palestine would be the only Arab state that democratically elects its own leaders. The US should sit down with Palestine, and state privately that it is prepared to do a deal. Establish a state that speaks to some of Israel's security concerns, and be prepared to back it internationally - - without Israeli participation. Israel won't recognize it initially. But that isn't going to matter over the long haul. If the US backs a public declaration of independence by Palestine, we will be bringing friends that will back it also.
