The headlines this week reeked of déjà vu, reminiscent of previous confrontations and intifadas, as conditions on the ground in Gaza are becoming more and more similar to those that preceded the 2014 war.19:05 05.02.16 | 4 comments
As a Jew of Mizrahi / Sephardic origin, born and raised among this community, but having had the opportunity to live and study outside of it, I would like to give my opinion: I believe that blaming the Ashkenazim is useless. It is in great part our own doing because most Mizrahi / Sephardic communities have not learned to value intellectual achievement over making a living in the short term. My own experience in higher education among a vast majority of Ashkenazim in the US showed me that this group tends to be more accepting of Mizrahi intellectuals than our own. It is this unfortunate reality that perpetuates the divide. If we don't know about our own intellectuals, sadly, nobody else will.
