The United States recognizes Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. The United States also accepts the judgement of international law that East Jerusalem is an illegally occupied territory. It does not currently accept the annexation of East Jerusalem. The congressional resolutions supporting an undivided Jerusalem are expressions of sentiment and perhaps some political posturing. These resolutions are not U.S. law or the official position of the government. The official position of the government is that the final status of East Jerusalem is unsettled and on the table for negotiation.
