Hamas kept bombing Israel directly and through its many mini-groups. Hamas refused to change its position regarding Israel's existence - read their insane charter again. Hamas proceeded to spend the money it did get on arms and arms smuggling. Hamas entered Israel to kill soldiers and kidnap one from whom nothing has been heard since. Etc. Don't blame Israel for doing the right thing. If someone openly wishes to eradicate you, especially using religious motives (as in: God wishes us to do this), being nice and opening further avenues for them to explore violence against you is irresponsible, not to mention foolish. Blame the Palestinians for seeking to destroy Israel more than they seek to build up themselves. Blame the Palestinians for their infighting and corruption. Blame the Palestinians for squandering the opportunity to make a model of Gaza. They received $1.2 billion in aid since Hamas took over, 10% more than the previous year so that "starving them" was not the issue.
