Dr. Lebens is buying into a proven myth. That only the Haredi system produces first rate Talmidei Chachamim. Y.U. has produced several first rate Talmidei Chachamim. Our Rosh Yeshiva, Rav Aharon Lichtenstein left the Charedi world of Chaim Berlin for college at a young age and Rav Nosson Tzvi Finkel studied first in a co-ed yeshiva high school. Most of the "Gedolim" of the last generation were not yeshiva products but had private tuition. I don't think his claim is accurate in the least and simply perpetuates a false myth. I have no problem with selecting a few of the best and brightest in every field and fostering their growth. But I find his claim of Talmud vs lets say maths and physics a bifurcation.
