I happened to be with a young Ukrainian woman from Kiev when we met a Russian man who was working in a shop in a high end optical shop. This occurred just a few weeks before the revolution in Kiev at the end of 2013. He was very nice and started talking to her, saying "don't you miss the time when it was the USSR and we were all one? We were better and stronger?" The woman's very pleasant demeanor transformed, and she could not hide her disdain. Even after we walked away it stayed on her face. There is no doubt in my mind that the Ukrainians do not want to be under Russia's thumb and domination again.
