My girlfriend and I saw the new Coen brothers film at a preview showing in Dallas. We can't give an authoritative opinion about it because we were so repulsed and bored that we made a hasty exit probably about two-thirds of the way through. I've lived and worked in the Washington D.C. area, Midwest, upper Midwest, Southern California, and Texas, and the picture of Jews and Jewish life presented by the Coen brothers bears little or no resemblance to my experience. Unfortunately, this cartoonish film will reinforce negative images and misconceptions about Jewish people. It is one of the featured films at the upcoming Doha Tribeca Film Festival in Qatar. It will probably be a big hit there, because it will reinforce the negative attitudes and beliefs of many Arabs and Muslims toward Jews. This disaster of a movie has caused me to reassess my own attitude toward the work of the Coen brothers.
