Anyone who has ever travelled through the occupied territories -- whether to eat kanafeh in Nablus, or visit Gush Emunim relatives in Hebron -- knows that the occupation has now succeeded in one respect: Israelis and Palestinians are so joined to one another that any surgical separation is impossible. The "imaginary" aspect of the peace processes that are discussed here is just this. For decades Israel worked to prevent a viable Palestinian state, and now it has got what it wants -- a set of prisonlike bantustan zones (A, B, and C). For their part, Palestinians articulated their desire for (and right to) self-governance through an amazing variety of ideologies (Marxism, socialism, liberalism, Islamism) and strategies (armed struggle, non-violent protest) -- all foiled by the strength of their colonizer and its patron, the USA. Meanwhile, one solution -- the one-state solution -- becomes more and more realistic. Want peace? End the occupation, deal with the reality -- one state for all.
