Strategic Asset? The US's strategic interests in the region are (i) stability (ii) avoiding being hated by as many as possible and (iii) oil. Being associated with settlement expansion and Israel's refusal to reach a just settlement with the Palestinians is antithetical to all these intersts. As the article notes, the letter is conspicuously quiet on these points. Democracy and liberal values? One cannot but note the contradictions. Within it's '67 borders Israeli civil society, warts and all, is still light years ahead of others in the region. And yet. The savage suppression of Palestinians in the occupied territories is frankly shameful. It has no place in a civilised world. The refusal to deal with the 1948 refugees is a stain, And democracy is all well and good. But it is certainly not an absolute value if the population returns governments that pursue an extremist nationalist agenda.
