The Turks under Erdogan have a remarkable capacity to see in others what they cannot see in themselves, and then to broadcast it such that they are excluded from any significant diplomatic channels. Here we have the FM prodding Assad to respond against Israel, even as Turkey wants the Syiran regime defeated, and has deployed US Patriot missiles to protect Turkey from the very threat that Israel struck. Unless the FM has a clever agenda to provoke Assad to retaliate and thus cause Israel to crush Syria, then Turkey owuld do well --for once --to just remain quiet. The leadership cannot remain quiet, they talk and talk. What did Turkey do when Assad downed their Phantom Jet ? Nothing, except talk. What did Turkey do when Israel attacked Gaza's rocket launchers? Nothing, except talk and rant, while Egypt's Morsi played traditional diplomacy and built enough credibility to survive the unrest today. With Israel, Turkey is still incensed over the Gaza Flotilla, of course. Despite Israeli warnings that the unfortuante outcome was predictable, and despite Israeli overtures for compensation, the Turks want Israel to grovel. That won't happen. Meanwhile, Ergoan will be on the outside looking in as Israel and Greece close energy deals in Cyprus. Israel may have isolated itself under Netanyahu, but the man has one ability the Turkish leadership cannot summon: the ability to hold one's tongue.
