Immediately after WW2, at the start of the cold war, Turkey hosted American listening posts to monitor Soviet communications They also stored American nuclear weapons and hosted an American air base. Ever since then Turkey and America have been firm allies. That Air base is still there. Today, Turkeys geography is more important than ever, with borders on Iran, Iraq, and Syria. It is unlikely that Turkey would allow an attack from American forces in Turkey to strike one of Turkeys neighbors, but, by the same token, Turkey can act as a mediator between its neighbors and the west.
