We all know the differences between the Israeli promises and the realities in the past. I want to believe this time is maybe different. The USA has obviously put a lot of pressure on behind the scenes, nothing else would explain this shift by Netanyahu. Maybe just maybe he has gone as far as he can with his right wing chums and got a 10 month freeze, on condition it doesn't apply to E J'sem. But the reality is that Israel can't build in Jerusalem at the moment anyway, Obama has already fired a warning shot about Gilo and this is getting very close to a public punch-up with the USA. Abbas has to be realistic here. He can say publicly at the outset that all settlement building is illegal, including in E J'sem. He can say privately that any further announcement of building in E Jsem and he's out of the peace talks on the spot. But he must take this opportunity to get talks started and not wait for a 'perfect moment' that will never come. Talks do not cost anything.
