the Hebrew letter zaiyn sounds indeed like Z in English. But the actual German spelling of the name of Mr. Levy's grandmother is Sofie or Sophie. The sound is the same as the Hebrew זופי Mr. Levy's original Hebrew Haaretz article spells the name: סופי (ZOFFIE) Since it was Czechoslovakia after 1918, it could have been spelled Žofie (Czech). Did Mr. Levy have access to any official document from the time of his father birth in Austro-Hungary. My father was born in the same year in Czernowitz (same Empire). My mother spoke to me in German same as Mrs. Thea Loewy spoke to then young Gideon. And my German still remains way stronger than my Hebrew. SF
